“Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands…”
“Husbands, love your wives…”
“Children, obey your parents…”
These are instructions that speak right to the heart of our homes. How are we to live these out - and live them out well?
On this Memorial Day Sunday, Charlie came in what he calls his “marrying and burying suit” because he’s worn it to both weddings and funerals—including recently giving his daughter away at her wedding!
He also thanked veterans for their service and shared a story of his uncle, a Korean War POW.
Afterwards, he got into the text in Colossians about marriage and family—especially as today was Charlie and Crystal’s 40 year anniversary!
• He emphasized the importance of having a clear “aim” or focus in marriage, likening it to a baseball pitcher focusing on the strike zone.
• He shared his personal faith journey: born again at age 10, baptized, and later meeting Crystal through her brother.
• Premarital counseling was scarce in the 1980s; he knew little about marriage or its spiritual significance at the time.
• Marriage is described as a profound mystery that symbolizes Christ’s relationship with the church.
• Crystal explained submission in marriage as voluntary cooperation and responsibility, not military control.
• She shared her experience of praying through disagreements and learning to trust God’s guidance in their marriage.
• Crystal encourages wives to be safe, trusting places for their husbands, avoiding criticism and gossip.
• Charlie urges husbands to love and honor their wives, warning that dishonoring them can hinder prayer.
• The couple stressed that marriage is a living picture of the gospel—grace, forgiveness, and enduring love.
